Expungement may help felon have a career

EXPUNGEMENT MAY HELP FELON HAVE A CAREER Eric,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am a 28 year old single mother with convicted felony in drug trafficking (non-violent).  This conviction was recent.  I completed 90-days house arrest, probation, and random drug testing.  I’m gladly jumping through all of the hoops necessary to become “rehabilitated”.

Previous to a secret indictment, I was considered an upstanding citizen, no more than a few speeding tickets on my wrap sheet.  I held a supervisory position in logistics/fulfillment/3PL for Dell, Inc.  Prior to my termination of employment, I worked there for 6 years.  They were silently aware of my conviction and thankfully decided to keep it quiet.  I was terminated for a completely unrelated reason to my felony conviction.

I now find myself on unemployment eligible for a Pell Grant, etc.  I’d like to attend the Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science, but am hesitant to attend for the obvious reasons.

After Internet based research (I’m too ashamed to call the school or state licensing board and ask specific questions), I’ve found only opinions related to whether or not you can find ex-felons in this profession.  This charge has been utterly debilitating in some aspects.  I’ve the know how and drive to push on and be successful even with a felony charge tattooed on my forehead… However, I cannot find the courage to seek whether a felony charge 4-6 years from now will force a fail of the state licensing required for not only an apprenticeship during/after a degree is obtained but a funeral director licensure later.

Since this is my first (and only) felony, I will be eligible to apply for an expungement after a certain amount of time passes.  Do you have any guidance or related information to send me in the right direction?

Kind Regards,

Amanda

Expungement may help felon have a career

Hello Amanda,

I applaud you for not letting your felony conviction define who you are.  Expungement is an option for some ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs but not all.  In your case, you want to become a mortician.  You would have to apply for licensing through the Board of Embalmers and funeral Directors of the state of Ohio.  Expungement or sealing does not erase records but hides them from public view. If an expungement is granted the conviction will always be visible to government agencies, the court system and law enforcement. Licenses are granted by some level of government.

Since expungement would not help in this case, I suggest you contact Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors to see if your felony conviction would prohibit you being licensed.  You can reach them here:

77 South High Street, 16th Floor
Columbus, Ohio 43215-6108
(614) 466-4252 | Fax: (614) 728-6825

Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs seek legal assistance. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office first to see if expungement or sealing are viable options and then to get help applying for it. I would never try to do it alone.  Often you may qualify for low cost or no cost help with getting an expungement or having your record sealed.

I hope this helps.
