Female Ex-offender wants a Job and to Help

JOBS FOR EX-OFFENDERS AND FELONS: FEMALE EX-OFFENDER WANTS A JOB AND TO HELP

My name is Colleen,

I have two past felonies on my record, one for forgery or writing a bad check in 2006 in which I spent 10 months in prison. It was said that the judge made an example of me because I was at the time a fire fighter paramedic. My second felony was a conspiracy to commit  burglary charge where my ex was involved mainly but I was charged because I knew and didn’t tell.  I ended up in a domestic violence shelter soon after where I gave birth to my now 3 year old son.

I am currently enrolled in college working on a degree in human services, yes money is not important in this degree, but rather a degree I hope to use in ether working as a victims’ advocate for women in or fresh out of domestic violence situations or I’d like to reach out to at risk teenage girls to help them understand their own strength and that they don’t need a guy to get them through life, but can stand on their own two feet.

What job could someone in my situation actually get where I am working directly with teenage or adult victims, being a two time felon and a former victim myself? I truly want to turn my negative past into a positive future for myself and others who are walking in my shoes.

THANK YOU!

Hello Colleen,

I have had students that were once in the same situation you are in.  It may be that the judge was exceptionally hard on on you because you had a position of public trust that you betrayed by participating in the commission of a crime.  Unfortunately your biggest mistake was the company you were keeping .  I see that with so many women that I meet.

It’s great that you are taking the opportunity to turn this negative chapter in your life into an opportunity to help others while earning a living.  Often the bad situations we find ourselves in are opportunities to redefine ourselves and change our respective directions.  They are really blessings in disguise.  As I mentioned, I have had students that have gone from prison, being homeless, drug abuse and other serious issues and are now helping others.  I even have a student that is now in medical school.

If you are looking for career direction, I suggest you contact the nearest United Way office.  The United Way supports many social service organizations.  You could explore many options.  When you find find an area that interests you, I suggest volunteering a few hours a week to get hands on experience and get a feel for what it would be like to similar types of work everyday.  Volunteering is also a great way to meet people and network in your chosen field.  You will probably make contacts that could lead you into employment or opportunities for education or training.

If there is no United Way office in your area, you will find volunteer opportunities at Volunteer Match.org.  VolunteerMatch helps communities by making it easier for people to find volunteer opportunities where they live. The organization offers a variety of online services to support a community of nonprofit, volunteer and business leaders committed to civic engagement.
