Finding a Job for Ex-offenders and Felons

by Adogzheart on June 27, 2009

“I’m done with my sentence but I can not find employment because of my criminal background.” I’ve heard this from innumerable ex-convicts. To staying out of prison, one must find stable employment. Research has proven that an ex-offender with full time employment is less probable to go back to prison. It’s not going anywhere. One of the best new labor sources are ex-offenders and felons. Increasingly employers are learning that employing ex-felons and ex-offenders makes good economic sense. Those who have been incarcerated are devoted to getting over the past, make great employees. Many are disciplined, industrious, and honest.

To find employment, one must have a defined plan that will lead to a job. Job hunters should devise a marketing plan designed to sell their product. What is the product? It is their set of skills and their attitude. To get the job they want, they must be able to get a potential employer to know precisely what they can do and how it can work for them. Being capable of identifying and describing skills will give them a huge advantage over the competition. They must then identify employers that can use their skills.

Finding a job is a game of numbers. The more leads they come up with, the more interviews they will get. The more interviews they get, the opportunity of landing a job increases. The challenge is to get as many quality leads as possible. If everything goes well, the interviews will come. The interview is the time where the product is matched to the company’s needs. To get the job, one has to in effect sell oneself by proper appearance, presentation of qualifications and poise. There must also be an attitude of trust and sincerity that will give the employer the feeling that they are hiring the person. Being organized and prepared is the key to being hired. Get a friend or family member to help you prepare for approaching interviews. Anticipate questions and practice your answers. Get a professional outfit and work on body language and appearance. This will put you in position to get hired.

Getting hired is not a precise science but being prepared will increase jobs for felons and ex-offenders. Best of luck!
