Ex-offender with sex offense needs job search advice

Q: My dad is a sex offender and has been struggling to find work in the small town we live in. We plan to move in hope that he can find work and I can continue my education to be a Registered Nurse. I need to know what kind of jobs he can look for or if you have any suggestions as to what he can do to look for work there. So many people just refuse to hire him even though the position he applies for has nothing to do with his background. In fact, he was convicted over 10 years ago and still is struggling. I have been supporting him and my brother for a few years now and don’t mind doing it. I just want to help him while we move because he’s a great father and really needs to be able to work. He deserves so much more than what he has been going through and I want to be able to be fully prepared for this move. Any advice would be great.

A: It’s great that you want to help your father and I don’t have to tell you that an ex-offender of felon with this type of conviction that finding a job is going to be a battle.

As I often suggest to ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is to apply for temporary employment. Temporary employment often leads to permanent jobs. I frequently encourage ex-offenders and felons searching for jobs to look at working as a temporary employee as a way of getting a permanent job. Temporary agencies are a great way to rapidly get a job. Many employers use temp agencies to try out new employees prior to hiring them. Good workers are hard to find. If an employer sees that ya person is punctual and fit in well, he may offer the job permanently. The key to applying for temporary employment for ex-offenders and felons is to apply at smaller independent agencies rather than large national companies. Small independent agencies have fewer hiring restrictions than larger national companies and are free to hire anyone they choose. He will be able to get a list of these agencies in your local phone directory.

With his background, he may also want to contact your local United Way office. The United Way supports a number of non-profit social service organizations that that help convicted felons
