Job with a Felony
Q: Hello,
My name is Tyrell. I live in Illinois and I have a felony for a having a gun in 2006 I never did time. I just got 2 yrs probation that I was released from early because I didn’t get in anymore trouble. I can’t find a job and I really need help. I have a family to take care of and its getting harder and harder do you know of anywhere that will hire me?
Thanks for your time
A: Hello Tyrell,
I’m sorry you are having so much trouble. Firstly, I would suggest ex-offenders and felons apply for jobs at retail chains like Toys R Us. This time of year, retail chains hire for the busy holiday season. This may help in the short term. You could also apply at supermarkets. They are always looking for night stocking help.
For the longer term you should look into getting your one felony downgraded or even sealed. To get more information on this process, check out the Cabrini Green Legal Aid. You may get assistance with this at little or no cost. The website is, http://www.cgla.net/services-guidelines.
They may also have contact with employers who hire ex-offenders and felons.
I hope this helps.
Are you an ex-offender who has a question about finding a job with a criminal record? You could have your question answered right here. Email your question to: BelievePublications@comcast.net.

Tyrell: I hope you were able to find a job. I’m not sure how many times background checks take place, but I wonder what would happen if you left it off.
Is your appearance professional or too casual? That alone may be your biggest setback.
When you meet the people for the interview, be as professional as possible (even if too the extreme). Do not give them a reason to think they need to do a background check.
I hope it all works out.
I have six Misdemeanors in wish I had to plead guilty so I can get out of jail. But, I have no Felonies. The last two was for “Simple Assult and Stalking. I had to plead guilty so I can get out of Jail. Can these Charges be expunged in the state of Georgia. Some people tell me that Misdemeanors don’t count. How ever, when I apply for a job on– the application it ask me, if I been convicted of a Misdemeanor. What do you think I should do.?
Hello Eddie,
It all depends what the applications ask for. Typically applications inquire about crimes not misdemeanors. In reference to expungement, you would need some legal help. Expungement statutes vary from state to state. Contact your local legal aid office to get low-cost or free legal assistance with this process.
Hello, in downtown phoenix, at the law library, (if you call them) and ask for the lady’s phone number who handles restoration of rights. She can help you to get that off of your back ground, also, in Phoenix, AZ, Miss Teresita Celaya at 602-542-6320 works in DES and helps people who have felonies and misdemeanors find work. That’s who you should contact if you can’t get rid of it. Also, there are jobs on sexyjobs.com that will hire you to work from home, text chat operator, (adult) and more jobs that don’t require a background check, they hire pretty much anyone. Check it out! Good Luck
